Project Background

Our client, Houlder Ltd https://www.houlderltd.com/, engaged us to provide mechanical engineering support to one of their key offshore wind equipment supply projects. This primarily involved providing support during the detailed engineering phase of one of their key projects with a major new client, as well as other general senior mechanical engineering support on their other projects in the Tyneside office.

How did we help?

Orion Product Development’s Kevin Urquhart BEng (Hons) CEng WhSch provided senior mechanical engineering and lead engineer support to complete the detailed engineering and production release of a 2000Te rated Jacket Lifting Tool This tool is essentially 2 large spreader frames separated by suitably sized slings, with the lower frame housing a bespoke hydraulic pin engagement system which allowing the tool to be remotely (and wirelessly) engaged and disengaged. It is specifically designed for use on the Aberdeen Offshore Windfarm Project, although it has a 25 year design life, and it required full DNV certification, which Kevin also supported.

Task included; leading a small team to complete detail design, calculations, manufacturing drawings, hydraulic and electronic system integration, regular client and end-user meetings, FMEA, Risk assessments, tolerance stack analysis, supplier liaison & production kick off meetings, technical queries, and full DNV certification to DNVGL-ST-N0001.

All work was carried out to the required international engineering standards in an extremely ambitious timescale and budget requirement, whilst also identifying multiple cost reduction and performance improvement opportunities and supporting other projects as the need arose.

The lifting tool was successfully built and accredited on time, and is currently operating in Aberdeen as planned.

The Orion Product Development team’s diligence, high standard of work and ability to integrate effectively into our team was vital in the successful delivery of the project, and as such we extended the contract twice in order to continue to utilise their engineering skills and valued engineering judgement. We would have no hesitation in recommending Orion to others.
