Project Overview - Detail Design and Engineering Drawing
We provided with additional design engineer resource on a major new product development for this customer, the client of which was a major North-east based offshore oil platform manufacturer. The project involved delivering a large number of bespoke handrail, safety gate and ladder designs and detailed manufacturing drawings in a short space of time. Client facing design reviews to agree the more involved design proposals were also held on the customer’s behalf. Total project value was several £100K, on a finished product worth several £100 million.I already knew of Kevin’s abilities and experience having previously worked with him on the Management Team at a mutual former company. I was therefore keen to engage him when we had an urgent skills shortage for a major high value project at Dyer. Kevin picked up the project requirements extremely quickly and delivered everything required in a professional and efficient manner, and to a very high standard. In fact, through his usual diligence and attention to detail he added significant value to the project over and above what was originally required, and I therefore had no hesitation in using him as my customer-facing representative in formal design reviews with our client. OPD have worked on a number of innovative new product development and cost reduction projects covering a range of safety related disability aids typically used in commercial and residential premises.
Each project involved the full product development cycle from idea generation, concept design, detail design, stress analysis, engineering drawing, prototyping, testing, project management and costing, introducing 6 Sigma project management techniques to the business.
In this case we have also provided the necessary technical leadership that currently does not exist in the business and have worked to all relevant International Standards, Regulations and Legislation, whilst delivering aesthetically pleasing and innovative design solutions. Various patentable designs were developed.
Project values ranged in value from <£10K up to several £100K.
I have engaged Kevin on several New Product Development and Cost Reduction initiatives, often under extreme time pressures. He takes ownership of each and every element of a project and his technical knowledge and experience fill a vital skills gap in the current organisational structure. He is highly innovative and we have made a recent patent application based on his latest work.
